Living Room Updates

before & After of a quick living room update!

When we moved to our new house in Wyoming, we knew we were going to need to touch every surface in some way or another. We had no intentions of jumping right in to the home renovations when we moved in, but when we discovered the carpet in all of the rooms were in desperate need of being torn out, we had no choice, but to start knocking out projects a bit at a time.

This room was one of the first we took on. For minimal cost (is anything home updating actually minimal though??) and work, we could transform this room so we jumped in. Some paint, some flooring, and some reclaimed wood and the room took on an entirely different look.

We first pulled out the carpet (the nasty, nasty carpet) and I decided there was nooooo way I was having carpet in the house after seeing just how bad it can become. I was craving a cleanable floor. (*****Please Note: Craving a cleanable floor and actually cleaning it are two very, very different things****). We had had great luck with Lifeproof Vinyl Flooring from Home Depot (Links at end of post!) in our last renovation so we grabbed the color we liked and didn't spend more than a few minutes thinking about it. That's generally how I work--sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't but generally gets the job done.

With the flooring out, we quick painted the walls and were able to install the flooring a few hours later. We used Behr paint from Home Depot. The color we chose was called Tanglewood--a color we'd used in previous updates which made for quick decisions as well. Link to the paint is below!

We'll eventually need to replace the window, but for now, I quick coat of white trim paint and canvas drop cloths as curtains cleaned it up!

We tore out the shelving by the fireplace and replaced it with reclaimed wood stained a dark walnut. Since the walls are tongue and groove and I knew we wouldn't be needing these shelves to hold heavy weight, I was able to use the Kreg system to install them to give them a floating look. A level, a tape measure, some screws, and an electric screwdriver and that was done quickly as well!

Add a sale rug from Amazon, some pictures of my kids, and a few pieces of handmade furniture--and I call it good enough for now!

Most of projects stop here in our house--the big parts are done, and the finishing touches will always be staring at me whenever we sit down to watch tv or read a book at night. We do have 3 kids so I call it priorities maybe?? Great excuse anyway. But, the point is, if I waited to do my before and after pictures, they'd just never happen. As I take more and better finished pictures, they'll eventually show up here...

So I'm going to be good with that and happy with the fact that in a matter of a day or two, we were able to take the living from

This....

by doing this.....

and finally to this.....

And we will continually be working on updating trim, finishing steps, finding pictures for the walls, and on and on for many years to come. But, does anyone have ideas for me on how to pull this all together??? I'm always happy to take them...

And finally....if you're interested....what we used and where to buy!
